Carmel was a graduate of St. Vincents Girls High in Saint John and Mount Carmel Academy.

She worked as a secretary in Saint John and London, Ontario until becoming a full time stay at home mom.

In later years she worked as a library assistant at Riverview High School. She was a member of The Immaculate Heart of Mary Church.
