He joined the Royal Rifles and then transferred to the Winnipeg Grenadiers and left to serve his country during WWII in Hong Kong on October 17, 1941.

Unfortunately during the battle of Hong Kong his regiment fell to the Japanese and all the survivors were taken prisoner where they spent the next 4 years in POW camps in Hong Kong and Japan.
