After studies in local schools, he completed high school and university studies at the University of St. Joseph's College, Memramcook.

He undertook theological studies at Holy Heart Seminary, in Halifax, NS, after which he was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Saint John in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception on May 30, 1953, by the Most Reverend Alfred B. Leverman.

He served as a curate in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Saint John; St. John the Evangelist Parish, Johnville; St. Joseph's Parish, Bath; Holy Trinity Parish, Saint John; St. Mary's Parish, Newcastle; St. Thomas Aquinas Parish, Campbe
