He was a veteran of the second World War, having served with the 1st Anti-tank Regiment.

He served in Sicily, Italy and Holland, where he contracted malaria and tuberculosis.

Following the war, he lived in Boston for a number of years, where he received a diploma from the National Radio Institute.

After which he worked in radio and television servicing.
