Ben was a veteran of the second World War, having served as a tank driver with the Army.

He received the 1939-45 Star, the Italy Star, the Defense Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and clasp, and the Victory Medal.

Following the war, Ben worked mostly as a truck driver, but also worked with the Corps of Commissionaires in East River.

He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 61, Yarmouth

He was a great supporter of the Maple Grove-Yarmouth High Memorial Club.
