Alfred joined the Canadian Army in 1953, trained as a paratrooper in Germany and served until 1956.

He was a member of Royal Canadian Legion, Branch # 6.

He worked for Eastern Bakeries for 35 years whereby he acquired the name of "Freddy Butternut" for the bakery's best selling sliced bread.

He was a Route Salesman until his retirement.

He was involved in union activities for several years with The Bakery, Confectionary and Tobacco Workers Int. Union.

He also served as a Vice-President for the Moncton District Labour Council.
