John a fréquenté l'école à Joggins avant de rejoindre l'Armée canadienne en 1940.

Il a servi outre-mer avec la Royal Canadian Army Service Corp, de 1940 à 1946.

Après sa libération, il a été employé dans les mines de charbon de Joggins jusqu'à ce qu'il se réengage en 1951.

Il a de nouveau servi dans le Service Corp. jusqu'en 1965 et à sa libération cette fois, il est devenu employé à la ferme expérimentale du gouvernement à Nappan jusqu'en 1970.

Il a ensuite accepté le poste de directeur adjoint au Nova Scotia Liquor Store à Joggins.

John attended school in Joggins prior to joining the Canadian Army in 1940.

He served overseas with the Royal Canadian Army Service Corp, from 1940 until 1946.

Following his discharge he was employed in the Joggins Coal Mines until he re-enlisted in 1951.

He served again in the Service Corp. until 1965 and upon his discharge this time he became employed at the Government Experimental Farm in Nappan until 1970.

He then accepted the position of Assistant Manager at the Nova Scotia Liquor Store in Joggins.
