Antoine (Anthony) Downing and his wife, Veronica Casey, live in Shemogue, New Brunswick from Feb 1835 to July 1838, then moved to Brae P.E.I with their 2 children who were born in Shemogue. They had 9 more children while living on Brae, P.E.I. Ant hony and Veronica probably left Prince Edward Island after 1861 to settle in Caissie Cape (then spelled Casey Cape). At that time the village of Caissie cape was settled by: Downing's, Murray's, Bateman's, Bishops, O'Brien's, Hughes, Casey's, Smit h's, and Tate's. Then Grand Digue had an Irish Priest by the name of Father N.J. Donnelly from 1863-1872, then another Irish Priest was in Grand Digue from 1872-1873, his name was Father Thomas V.G. Connolly. Anthony, as a young man, wore the robe of priesthood, and almost became a priest. He fell in love with an Irish Girl named Veronica Casey, and left the priesthood to marry her, he then made his living farming and fishing. |
