Omer joined the Army (Militia) in January 1956 and served until June 1981 with the 32 Service Battalion, then with the Supplementary Reserves until July 1983, retiring as Acting Chief Warrant Officer.

Omer retired from his day job as a Right-of-way agent at NB Power in 1989; he had started his 44 year career with Moncton Electricity and Gas, NB Power's predecessor.
