He attended Saint John High School and had varied interests as a young man including photography, musical promotion and the sport of fencing. He served briefly in the Canadian Forces before moving to Edmonton where he worked as an electrician an

d meat packer. He returned to New Brunswick and settled in Cape Tormentine working fishing boats for a period prior to becoming ill.
