For thirty years, Vernon was a school teach in Lockeport, Shelburne County.

Vernon travelled extensively world-wide, including London, Italy, Spain and also Japan and what was then, communist Russia.

He was active is an understatement having been involved with Center Stage Theatre troupe, Kentville, life member of Winds of Change Drama Club, Liverpool and having also performed in the Japanese Theatre Festival, Japan.

He served as president of the Bridgewater Gardening Club and Nova Scotia Garden Club, having been a horticultural judge for many events.
