He was a veteran of the second World War, having joined the Prince Edward Island Highlanders (Régiment de Maisonneuve).

He served in France, Germany, Belgium, England and Canada, having received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, the King George Medal and the Normandy Medal.

Harold worked primarily as a carpenter and as a lobster fisherman, having also farmed and worked as a tuna fishing guide.
