Gilbert was a retired soldier (1942-1946, 1953-1972) and heavy equipment operator.

He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 155 Wedgeport and a veteran of WWII (West Nova Scotia Regiment).

Gilbert was with the Canadian Army when Apeldoorn, Netherlands was liberated.

When asked to recount his wartime experience, he expressed compassion towards both the Dutch and the young German soldiers.

After the war Gilbert worked at Cosmos Imperial Mills in Yarmouth before rejoining the Canadian Forces in 1954.

He served with the Canadian Engineer’s in Chilliwack, BC, the former West Germany, Alert, Petawawa and Barrington.

Gilbert retired to Pinkney’s Point in 1972.

He worked as a heavy machine operator for contractors, including Aberdeen Paving, before retiring at age 65.
