He served as Past President of the Saint John St. Patrick's Society and continued as a director.

Hugh was also an active member of the Irish Canadian Cultural Association and his favourite watering hole was O'Leary's.

He was a Past Faithful Navigator (Knights of Columbus), a former chairman of the Maritime Provinces Harness Racing Commission, an avid horseman, Saint John City Councillor from 1989-1992, was active with the funeral directors convention of 1981.

A member of the Liberal Party and in past years he volunteered tirelessly with the Boys & Girls Club of Saint John.
