Pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, il a servi dans l'armée américaine en tant que mécanicien automobile.

De retour de la guerre, il travaille à son compte comme mécanicien puis travaille pour la Ville de Berlin.

Il est ensuite allé travailler sur le mont Washington, une carrière qui a duré 32 ans. D'abord, pour l'US Air Force sur le dégivrage puis pendant de nombreuses années par WMTW TV en tant qu'ingénieur mécanique au Mount Washington Summit. En hiver

, il facilitait les changements de quart avec les snow cats.

Au cours des années 1960, lui et sa femme Germaine possédaient et exploitaient un dépanneur à Jackson, NH.
